SEA HOLISTIC RADIANCE – REVIEW BY DAILY RECORD JULY 11TH 2006
BY SAMANTHA BOOTH
Rarely do you find a treatment which provides everything body and soul could possibly need, but Phytomers Sea Holistic Radiance Treatment is exactly that.
This perfect pre-holiday treat includes a body scrub, facial and massage and was one of the most deliciously relaxing therapies I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I knew from the moment I walked into the darkened treatment room at Sano Spa , on the south side of Glasgow, that this would be something special.
Lavender filled muslin boluses in a steamer filled the air with calming, perfumed steam and I knew I was in for an hour and a half of pure bliss.
My face was cleansed and moisturised before my body was thoroughly scrubbed with invigorating citrus sea salts. After a shower it was time for the real relaxation to begin.
With a warm eye mask soothing my face, my therapist went to work with the herb filled boluses, pressing the warm packages against pressure points along my legs before slowly building up the pressure.
I could feel all the tension melt away. Then with the perfumed packets nestled snugly next to my neck, my therapist began to massage my legs once more, this time using a Thai hand massage technique.
The whole process was then repeated over my entire body, front and back, leaving me feeling sublimely relaxed while confident that the lavender, steam and minerals had been cleansing my pores and detoxing my system at the same time. All I needed now was to be transported to my bed for a long, restful sleep- not a treatment to get in your lunch break.
SEA HOLISTIC RADIANCE- REVIEW BY SUNDAY HERALD MAGAZINE 6TH AUGUST 2006

If it wasn’t for the fact that I have to fill this space, I would sum up the Phytomer Sea Holistic Radiance treatment at Sano Spa thus: sciencey bit……aawrrgh…drool. Think Homer Simpson dreaming of free donuts and you get the idea; this experience is very nice indeed.
The 90 minute treatment consists of a salt body scrub, a facial and a full body massage with warm boluses (small tightly tied cloth sacks) of grain, salt, lavender and essential oils.
First my therapist started on the facial. Eyes gently sealed I switched off, enjoying the rhythmical hand movements across my chin, cheeks and neck. Then my full body was scrubbed, cleansed and exfoliated with invigorating citrus sea salts.
Just as I was settling into the horizontal I was ordered up for a shower. Mind you in the spa’s powerful shower with jets in all kinds of places, this is no chore at all.
I lay back down ready for some muscular relaxation. The steamy, fragrant boluses were laid repeatedly on various points on my body. With each application the pressure was increased and the massage deepened.
The therapist also used a Thai hand technique, which in my now dream-like state made me believe she had either sprouted extra arms or had summoned a team of assistants. With warm scented cushions around my neck and a mask over my eyes there was no real way of telling whether or not this was the case.
And this was only side one. I turned (my body so limp, felt 10lbs heavier) and had the full works again on my back. I don’t remember how I got home, but I slept well that night!
DETOX BOX – REVIEW DAILY RECORD 15TH 0CTOBER 2005

Many people enjoy a sauna after they’ve been for a workout and in Scandinavia they are a huge part of everyday life. But not a lot of people realise that infra-red saunas, rather than traditional types, can have huge health benefits.
Scientific studies have proven that the kind of heat they produce can combat everything from cellulite to cancer as well as boosting the immune system.
Janice Clyne, company director of Sano Spa which houses Scotland’s only commercial far infra red sauna said ‘ I was convinced that far infra red technology would benefit our clients health. After research the best product available was the Detox Box from Hi Tech Health- it is the most environmentally friendly as it is constructed from Russian Spruce, a hypoallergenic timber with a toxin free focus.
The technology emits a wavelength similar to Reiki energy, providing a range of health benefits which everyone can enjoy.
“Personally, I find it wonderfully relaxing, almost addictive, I’m looking forward to introducing more clients to this amazing new spa treatment”
The benefits of sessions in a far infra red sauna cannot be over estimated.
A German clinic gained a great reputation for using far infra red heat with a detoxifying diet and low dose chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer. The clinic has since successfully treated dozens of patients. Body temperature rises which occur in far infra red saunas are reported to simulate a ‘natural fever’ which boosts our immune system. Far infra red saunas have even been proved by NASA to be the perfect form of passive exercise. The body’s natural cooling process, which takes place while using the sauna, provides similar cardiovascular benefits to those experienced by a proper workout.
The space agency first researched this element and decided it was the best way to maintain astronauts fitness levels during space flights.
An average person can sweat off up to 1500gms of sweat in a far infra red sauna which is up to two or three times that of a normal sauna and is the same as doing a two to three mile run.
The saunas have also been proven to speed up metabolic processes of vital organs, aid the relaxation process, quicken the healing of strains, sprains and arthritis and remove fat stored toxins from the body. The heat produced is also said to increase the body’s nitric oxide levels which for men is effectively the same result produced by Viagra!
Janice said “ There are no bad effects of the far infra red sauna, so even if you are sceptical a few pleasant sessions in one is certainly not going to do you any harm.
“And one of the best things about the treatment is that the environment in a far infra red sauna is no where near as humid as a traditional sauna so people who have trouble breathing in normal saunas or find the conditions too uncomfortable will have no trouble at all sitting in this heat.”

Most things we crave are not good for us: nicotine, chocolate cake, that bloke on the sports desk, you know how it goes. But there is one thing our bodies seem to love which is also beneficial- warmth. The Greeks were the first to discover this. The physician Parmenides apparently declared: “ Give me the power to create fever and I will cure any disease.” At increased temperatures, your body fights disease more effectively. However, you can’t sit too long in a sauna with your body burning away, so mow a more comfortable alternative is becoming increasingly popular in Europe and the States. Far-infra red heat treatment, a lower frequency energy, seems to have the same healing benefits of intense heat but the body can sit at comfort. It is also believed by some that cellulite and cancer cells can be controlled using this healing energy. The best way to describe the feeling is to imagine sitting at midday in a baking hot country, but quietly in the shade of a tree.
This treatment is now available in Scotland, in Sano Spa in Clarkston, Glasgow, and after a half hour of sitting, reading, gently sweating (well this is a good way to workout) my body feels warm, calm and relaxed. To add to this feeling, I opt for a half hour massage – the manipulation of the muscles is more effective once they are warm and soft. I emerge back into the street a new woman, and I am hooked. At about £2000 to actually have one in your own house I might even start saving the pennies!
REVIEW –AQUASUN AND SALT BRUSHING SUNDAY HERALD MAGAZINE 19TH FEB 2006
Well I really want to go to the Dead Sea for a bit of salty revitalisation but 1) it is a hell of a long way for a Sunday afternoon and 2) can I really justify signing myself off from family duties for something so indulgent? Oh if only there was a way of getting all the benefits of Dead Sea salts and minerals here in Scotland.
Bingo! The Sano Spa in Glasgow offers a Salt Brushing Body Glow exfoliation treatment, rounded off by an Aquasun Massage Bath. So off I set, guilt free, knowing I’II be home in time to get the kids from school.
First off the therapist grabs a handful of a nourishing blend of Dead Sea salts, Vitamin E, coconut oil and citrus and vigorously scrubs it over my body, limb by limb. The skin tingles a little as the salt works its way into the minute abrasions, but its an energising experience with the oil and citrus leaving my skin supple and fresh.
Next its into the Aquasun bath. This is a hot salt and mineral bath with massaging jets and a low level UV light. My skin looked oddly purple and green, but I am told this is normal. At this point the therapist discreetly slips away for about 20minutes leaving me to turn myself over on the cue of a buzzer.
This, I could get used to. But eventually the final buzzer sounds and its off to the shower jets for a wash off.
One of the best things about this treatment is that you can buy a pack of Pure Dead Sea salts for a booster treatment at home on your own. Pure dead brilliant
REVIEW FLOATING IN A RELAXING BATH IS SUNNY DELIGHT DAILY RECORD 2ND MAY 2006
Sano Spa on Glasgow’s south side doesn’t look anything out of the ordinary.
From the outside, it is difficult to distinguish from the neighbouring shops. But once inside you are transported to a world of tranquil relaxation.
Waxing and manicures are on offer, but the emphasis is on health and well-being rather than beauty, which is undoubtedly reflected in the range of treatments. And the first one I decided to put to the test was the perfect antidote to a Scottish winter – an Aqualux bath designed to give you all the benefits of a day on the beach.
Soothing, warm bubbling water filled with Dead Sea salts releases 21 different minerals to hydrate and exfoliate the skin. Lying in the bath would be pleasant enough, but a UVC free sun canopy is lowered to just above the bath for that true beach feeling- ideal for sufferers of SAD, eczema and psoriasis. This is not a sun-bed but it does provide all the mental and physical goodness of sunny days without any of the harmful rays. It is very relaxing and quickly eases any aches and pains while breaking down toxins.
Then it was time for a full body Swedish massage, followed by a Dermalogica facial which started with a close inspection of the state of my facial skin. I was startled to discover that I should be moisturising behind my ear lobes. Hot flannels, face masks and a delightful face and neck massage all followed until I was left with clear, fresh skin and a great sense of well-being an hour later.
Finally I treated my feet to a pedicure. They must have thought they’d died and gone to heaven as they were exfoliated, massaged and moisturised before the nails were filed and painted

The only shock is how wonderful this feels.
Having an electric current passed through your face sounds more like torture than therapy but my recent collagen facial involved just that and was one of the most relaxing treatments I have ever had. In fact, the whole process at Clarkston’s Sano Spa was one of surprises, including the excellent results. The treatment started off with a back scrub, which left me nicely relaxed.
Then there was the usual cleansing ritual, involving hot flannels and exfoliating, but that’s where the similarities with other facials ended.
Once my skin was free of surface dirt a thin gauze mask was placed over my face and the first electrical treatment began. Small metal probes, emitting a tiny current, massaged my face, helping to draw out impurities while toning and firming the skin.
The electrical massage is repeated but this time over a cold collagen gel mask designed to plump the skin and help decrease wrinkles and I found the coolness of the facial was also incredibly soothing. And lying under the cool of the collagen, having my face cleansed with a warm lemon scented flannel, was a wonderful feeling and one heightened by the contrast.
It was, in fact, the facial that had everything – it was relaxing, my skin was left clear, fresh and noticeably toned and, judging by the number of spots I had for a day or two afterwards, it was also successful in drawing out impurities as well.
Overall a completely satisfying experience and I do believe that after the recommended five sessions my wrinkles would be hugely improved.
